SHINTUYA

History

Shintuya is a native community of the Harakbut people located in the Manu province of Peru, in the Madre de Dios region. The community was founded in 1950 and has a long history connected to the Harakbut people, their territory, traditions, and relationship with the Amazon rainforest. Today, Shintuya remains an important cultural community in the Alto Madre de Dios area and continues to preserve its Indigenous identity and traditions.

Shintuya offers visitors an opportunity to experience the Amazon beyond traditional tourist destinations. The area combines the Harakbut community, rainforest landscapes, the Alto Madre de Dios River, waterfalls, natural pools, and traditional cultural experiences. Visitors can explore the community, learn about local traditions, walk through the rainforest, and discover the natural surroundings of the Amarakaeri territory

Amazon Rainforest

Shintuya is surrounded by the extraordinary landscapes of the Amazon rainforest, with rivers, tropical vegetation, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. The Alto Madre de Dios River provides an important natural corridor through the region, while the surrounding forest is home to numerous species of birds, mammals, and plants. Visitors can enjoy hiking, wildlife observation, birdwatching, and exploring the rainforest.

Shintuya is closely connected with the Reserva Comunal Amarakaeri, a protected area that conserves large areas of Amazonian forest and biodiversity while supporting the traditional territories and livelihoods of Indigenous communities. The reserve is managed through cooperation between the State and Indigenous communities. This makes the area an important destination for experiencing Amazonian nature while learning about Indigenous conservation and territorial traditions.

Shintuya does not have traditional beaches, but the rivers and natural pools of the Amazon provide opportunities to enjoy the water in a completely different environment. The area around the Shintuya waterfall includes a natural pool where visitors can swim and relax surrounded by rainforest. Rivers and waterfalls are an important part of the experience in this Amazonian landscape.

Shintuya is home to the Harakbut people, whose culture is deeply connected to the forest, rivers, territory, and traditional knowledge. Visitors can learn about Indigenous customs, crafts, traditional songs, body painting, language, and the use of rainforest plants. Cultural tourism in the community offers an opportunity to meet local people and better understand the relationship between the Harakbut culture and the Amazon rainforest.
