Puerto Iguazú
History
Puerto Iguazú has a long history connected to the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the region and to the rivers and forests surrounding the Iguazú Falls. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Guaraní people, whose culture and traditions remain an important part of the region today.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the area began to develop as a settlement known as Puerto Aguirre. Interest in the Iguazú Falls increased, and efforts were made to improve access to the waterfalls and make the area more accessible to visitors. In 1922, the Hotel Cataratas was inaugurated, marking an important step in the development of tourism.
In 1934, the creation of Parque Nacional Iguazú established a protected area around the waterfalls and surrounding rainforest. Over the following decades, Puerto Iguazú developed into an important tourist destination and the main gateway to the Argentine side of the Iguazú Falls, combining natural landscapes, wildlife and Guaraní cultural heritage.
