History
Playa del Carmen has ancient roots connected to the Maya civilization. The area was known as Xaman-Há and served as an important coastal settlement and starting point for Maya pilgrims traveling to the island of Cozumel, which was associated with the worship of Ix Chel, the Maya goddess of fertility.
After the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, the region experienced major changes as Spanish colonization spread across the Yucatán Peninsula. For centuries, the area remained a small coastal settlement, with fishing and maritime activities playing an important role in local life.
During the 20th century, Playa del Carmen gradually developed from a small fishing village into a major tourist destination. The growth of tourism, the development of the Riviera Maya and improved connections with Cancún and other destinations transformed the town into one of Mexico’s best-known Caribbean destinations, while its Maya heritage remains an important part of the region’s identity.
